Why I Make Devilled Sausages From Scratch?
I have been making my devilled sausages this way for years, but before that I was often using a packet – nothing wrong with packet mixes, a few of them are really nice and so convenient! But I wanted to share this recipe as it is delicious and you know exactly what is going into your evening meal.

What Are Devilled Sausages?
The ingredients for this one are quite basic. No one wants a bunch of ingredients sitting in the cupboard that they are unlikely to use again. These basic ingredients are ones that you use for many slow cooker recipes so really handy to have.
If you are unfamiliar with the term devilled sausages, these are sausages cooked in a lovely sweet, spicy and sticky sauce. The flavours are just lovely. In our case there is not much spice at all, but definitely room to add some if you prefer!
The name seems to refer to a time when anything with spice on it was called devilled something – who remembers devilled eggs?

Simple Pantry Ingredients for My Devilled Sausages Recipe
You will need the following ingredients to make my Slow Cooker Devilled Sausages:
- Sausages
- Beef Stock
- Onion
- Chopped Tomatoes
- Soy Sauce
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Apples
- Garlic
- Brown Sugar
- Tomato Sauce
- Cornflour
- Paprika
- Salt & Pepper
What Gives Devilled Sausages Their Sweet and Sticky Sauce?
The sweet comes from the apples and the brown sugar, the stickiness comes from the soy and Worcestershire sauce combining with the other ingredients to create a delicious sauce quite unlike any other.
If your sauce turns out thinner than you’d like, my guide on How to Thicken Slow Cooker Sauce shares several easy ways to achieve a richer consistency.

A Simple “Set and Forget” Slow Cooker Dinner
The best thing about these sorts of meals is that you simply throw everything into the slow cooker and allow it to do its thing, in this case either 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low. You can prepare this meal in the morning before you begin your day and have a gorgeous smell of dinner just when you need it.

Do You Need to Brown the Sausages First?
I have not browned the sausages for this recipe, you can if you like but it is not a necessary step with the amount of cooking time, however you are welcome to. I simply layered the ingredients, gave it a good stir, cover and bake!
Make sure the sausages are thawed before placing them in the slow cooker.
Slow Cooker Cooking Times Guide
There are only a few easy steps to create this delicious Slow Cooker Devilled Sausages dish – remember the cooking time is either 4 hours on HIGH or 8 hours on LOW.

Delicious dinner, Thank you
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it ☺️
I dont have any tapes could I use tinned pears?
You can, you may find they are mush at the end but they’ll add a lovely flavour.
Ok thanks maybe I’ll add them nearer the end of cooking time
Lol should say apples
Trying this for first time today, just so looking forward to dinner tonight. Wonderful mixture of ingredients, I know I’ll fall in love with It!
Thank you so much! 👏🏻👏🏻……Jilly
That’s great! Enjoy ☺️
Is it possible to make this without onions as I can’t eat them? I leave them out of meals I’ve cooked before but not sure when trying something new. Thanks!
Definitely can leave them out, we often do ☺️
Made this today – delicious!! I had 12 sausages, instead of 8, with the same amount of sauce…it worked so well, and leftovers for the freezer
Wonderful! So glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Hi Anna, I really loved the sound and look of this recipe. We have been married for 53 years 😳, until I had a surgery oops five years ago I did all the cooking, but hey not the dishes! Now my hubby is chief cook, occasionally I look for a simple, yummy sounding recipe, this certainly filled the bill. Out came the slow cooke, after one fixable oops it was fantastic and I don’t like sausages. I requested it this again week and you guessed it – hubby required no tuition or suggestions 🤣 I did ask for rice though as I was like a kid folding the rice through the gravy with great joy , if no one out there has tried this it is yet another one of Anna’s fantastic recipes.
Thank you so much Anna I hope you realise how much you are appreciated and admired.
That’s so lovely to hear! I’m so pleased to hear your chief cook nailed this one!
Hi I am very interested in trying this but was wondering if I can skip the apples or whether they disappear in the sauce as my partner will refuse to eat it if there is apple pieces.
Can skip the apples just adds a sweet taste. You can cook with apples then remove them before serving his portion.
When I had a fussy eater at home and made my oven devilled sausages I would use a couple of small tins of pureed apple for babies and mix it in instead of chopped apple. Worked a treat as there was no obvious apple taste but it did add to the overall flavour. She never did find out there was apple in it 😂
I’m looking forward to trying this slow cooker version.
What a fabulous idea!
I cooked this today fantastic and so easy, recommended to my dad and all my friends. My kids loved it. We normally use the packet mix which is good but this recipe blows them out of the water.
That is wonderful feedback! Thank you
Hi Anna, would this cook okay in the microwave and how long would you recommend?
PS I have cooked this twice in slow cooker and everyone loves it especially my grandson-inlaw.
Made this the other night and it was so easy and delicious!!! Added the cayenne pepper and mustard and it gave it a really nice flavour! Will definitely be a regular on the rotation.
What lovely additions!
Would you use beef or pork sausages?
Either would be just lovely, whichever one you prefer
Can you double the mixture?
Absolutely for the sausages, but perhaps don’t exactly double the sauce, instead try 1.5 times the liquid ingredients.
I’ve made this twice and it was lovely. I added bell peppers and carrots just to get more veggies.
